Review Motorola E5 Play For You

The Moto E5 Play is Motorola's first smartphone based on Android Go – a version of the operating system that has features optimized for smartphones with very basic hardware. This is the case here: the device shown in this review has the Snapdragon 425 chip and only 1 GB of RAM.

Google's intention with Android Go is laudable: to offer a minimally decent experience of using the platform on phones with fragile specifications and therefore cheaper. Or relatively cheap, since the official price of the Moto E5 Play does not exceed 100 euros.

Could it be that this value is fair? Does the Moto E5 Play even manage to offer a good experience on account of Android Go? How is the battery life and performance on a day-to-day basis? To find these answers, I have used the device for a few days. I relate my perceptions in the following lines.

It is interesting how the Moto E5 Play fits well in the hands. This is due to the slight curvature near the sides, which facilitates grip. The lightness also helps: it weighs only 145 grams.

The cover is made of a thin plastic, but it does not convey a feeling of fragility. And she has an increasingly rare feature: she's removable. You need to remove the cover to insert the microSD and the two SIM cards (in the nano-SIM standard).

He can tell this is a Motorola device because of the circle that houses the camera on the back – already a trademark of the Moto line.

The fingerprint reader is in the opposite situation to that of the camera: the sensor circle has a depth, more than average. The advantage of this is that you can locate the reader quickly. The component works fine, unlocking the phone quickly.

Motorola E5 Play screen

It has a 5.3-inch IPS LCD panel and an 18:9 ratio, but I'm already getting ahead of myself: the screen is probably the most negative point of the E5 Play. It is true that this is an entry-level smartphone, but even so, it deserved an improved screen.

The problems start with the resolution: we have 960 × 480 pixels on a screen that, as you already know, is 5.3 inches. You may not perceive the pixels easily here, but it's noticeable that the low resolution causes visual information to lose detail, albeit unobtrusively.

At least this is a screen that does not use a lot of energy, an important feature for a cell phone that has a 2,100 mAh battery. But we'll talk about that component later.

Cameras Moto E5 Play

You can't expect incredible cameras in a smartphone with a budget offer, but within its category, the Moto E5 Play comes off well.

The rear camera has a single 8-megapixel sensor, autofocus, and f/2.0 aperture. The set produces photos with decent coloration and low noise in good lighting conditions, as it should.

If you think a certain photo is lacking vibrancy or you need more detail, you can turn to HDR – which comes set to automatic in the camera app, but you can permanently turn it on or off. The mode works fine, but it's not perfect. In open-air photos, for example, you can lighten certain points, but darken others in an attempt to compensate for the clarity.

On the front, the camera brings a 5-megapixel sensor and f / 2.2 aperture. As in the rear, the whole is decent if we consider the category of the smartphone. There is some loss of detail in post-processing, but overall, selfies look good.

A detail worth mentioning: despite the fact that the sensors are simple, the camera application has a manual mode that allows you to adjust ISO or white balance, for example. The inconsistency here is that due to screen limitations, you may have a hard time judging whether manual adjustments have the expected effects on the image.
